We dined at Number One Restaurant & Bar (Circular Quay, Sydney) tonight on the recommendation of friends who ate there only last night and enjoyed the experience.
Our overall impression was so-so. The food was certainly good, but the service wasn’t. Although the entrees came within a reasonable time, the mains seemed to take forever.
We both had the scallops as an entrée (Scallops Poached with Noilly Prat) while the mains were spatchcock (Ballotine of Spatchcock with Foie Gras, Sweetbreads & Mushroom Risotto) and tempura fish of the day. All good.
A large group – around 12 people, seemed to add too much pressure to the staff. When we tried to attract their attention at different times we both were under the impression that they were deliberately not seeing or hearing us until they had finished their other tasks.
We requested the bill and it didn’t arrive. We explained the problem to another waiter and it then arrived fairly promptly.
Restaurants have to learn that despite excellent food, patrons will leave with a sour taste in the mouth if the service doesn’t match.
